Viktor Gumenniy, Deputy commander in chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces, said that development works were almost over and first test-pieces of the S-500 brand-new AD system would enter service with the AF in the nearest future.

The S-500 advanced missile systems of the air-to-ground class are multipurpose long-range high-intercept complexes, which have an increased anti-missile capacity. They were developed by the VKO Concern ‘Almaz-Antey’. Specific feature of the S-500 is the system, which has 600 kilometers kill range and can intercept not just aerodynamic targets such as aircraft, helicopters and others but also ballistic and cruise missiles. The overall number of S-300 air-defense systems scheduled for purchase within the state defense procurement program is five.
