Project 949A “Antey”

The Project 949A “Antey” nuclear underwater missile cruisers have been and will remain an important component of the Russian fleet. When under development it was tasked with counteracting aircraft carrier battle groups of the NATO fleets that required the sub to carry heavy missile munition. They built 11 nuclear powered ships altogether, one of which was lost in 2000 (the K-141 “Kursk”).

These large ships (24 thous. ton of underwater displacement) nicknamed «loafs” for their outlines, were equipped with the P-700 «Granit” anti-ship missile complex (combat stock — 24 heavy cruise missiles, 7 tons of launch weight each). The subs can apply the weapon at a distance of over 500 km including by external target detection via reconnaissance satellites.
