'Obninsk' submarine makes first voyage after upgrading

The 'Obninsk' multipurpose nuclear submarine of the Northern fleet has returned to the base from distant voyage.

Alexandr Moiseev, commander of the Northern fleet underwater forces, submariners, relatives and clergies met the crew in Zaozersk (Murmansk Oblast).

'Obninsk' crew got the 2015 training year prize. The submariners also got a traditional whole roasted pig, while their wives cooked a gigantic cake in the shape of a nuclear submarine.

'Obninsk' submarine of the Project 671RTMK is one of two subs of this class remaining in service. These submarines were earlier planned for decommissioning by 2015 as part of optimization process. However, in 2014 it was restored and upgraded at the 'Nerpa' shipbuilding plant thus extending the service life. The current voyage was the first after upgrading.

'Obninsk' nuclear submarine was built at 'Admiralteyskie verfi' and entered service with the Northern fleet in 1991. It was nominated the best ship of the Navy a few times according to the results of combat training and weapon employment. It has modern missile and torpedo systems as well as stealthiness characteristics.
