The ship will be called ‘Federatsiya’ (‘Federation’). The name was proposed by Andrei Smokotin from the city of Kemerovo.

The jury chose ‘Federatsiya’ out of the three finalists of the contest. ‘Gagarin’ and ‘Vector’ won the second and the third places respectively. They will also be used for other aerospace projects of the industry, Interfax says.

RKK ‘Energiya’ said the winner-name fitted the series of new space vehicles as “Russia is the federation which consists of 85 subjects; each one will be able to give a space ship its name”.

35 thousand people altogether took part in the contest proposing about 6 thousand original names. Out of them the jury chose 10: ‘Gagarin’, ‘Vector’, ‘Federatsiya’, ‘Astra’, ‘Galaktika’, ‘Rodina’, ‘Zodiak’, ‘Mir’, ‘Zvezda’ and ‘Lider’.

We remind that the contest was arranged by the RKK ‘Energiya’ along with ‘Roskosmos’ and ORKK late in August of 2015.

Author of the winning name will go to the Baikonur Cosmodrome and will witness the launch of ‘Soyuz’ guided vehicle in the Spring of 2016.
