Brand new UAVs will be deployed at the islands as well.

The ‘Russian business magazine’ reports that Russian Defense minister Sergei Shoygu ordered the ‘Bastion’ and ‘Bal’ coastal missile systems as well as brand-new UAVs deployed at the Kurils.

The media reports that missile systems will be delivered as part of 2016 re-equipment program.

In addition to deploying the anti-ship systems, air defense means control area at the Kurils will be expanded. According to the head of the military agency, deployed arsenals will be able to kill the planes and missiles of the enemy within all ranges possible: small, middle and big.

We remind that Russia’s Pacific fleet bases might be deployed at the Islands of the Greater Kuril Ridge. Russian Defense ministry will send an expedition to examine the archipelago.

Russia and Japan have not signed the peace treaty since the end of the WWII yet. Islands of the Greater Kuril Ridge, which became part of the USSR at the end of the WWII, are the stumbling block. Japan lay claim to the South Kurils referring to the two-sided treaty on trade and borders of 1855.
